Cascarones

I've been seeing these in the stores for weeks...OK, that could be a whole other blog post about the weird things in our stores here.  I love it when I can't find any squash, but where the squash was there are all kinds of cactus and peppers.  I really don't think they are interchangeable. Although I really want to learn to cook cactus..  I mean if there was ever an emergency the stuff is pretty plentiful here.  I love the oak forests full of cacti.

Sorry, I was running down a rabbit trail (Texan for going on a tangent).

These are really cool.  We were down town for Fiesta and they were selling for just a little more than Walmart, so we bought a dozen.  Basically they are an egg that has had one end broken off, emptied out (I really hope washed), then confetti put inside and a piece of tissue paper glued on the end to close it up.
You then smash it and it rains confetti down on you.  The kids loved it.
The best part about doing these down town was that the mess stayed there.  Although Nathan got some confetti on his neck and drooled on it.  It left some beautiful bright blue stains on his neck for a few days, but with all the drool he always has I'm sure no one noticed.
And that's Cascarones.  Just in case you want some and your Walmart and grocery stores don't carry them, here are the directions http://www.save-on-crafts.com/howtomacacoe.html

They are great for Easter or Fiesta.

Remember the Alamo

In front of the Alamo.  I was worried it would be really crowded with Fiesta week, but it was actually the emptiest that I'd ever seen it.

Welcome to Texas - cactus and all
In the courtyard of the Alamo.
They were doing a presentation that day out in the courtyard.  Emma and Brinna were pretending to fire a cannon.  I wasn't paying to much attention to the details of the pretend play - until I hear them yell Fire!! and the area by the speaker was exploding with pine cones.  Which they then go running in front of everyone to recover and reload.  Needless to say their cannon didn't fire again.

Pacific War Reenactment

Last Saturday we took Grandpa to Fredericksburg for the Reenactment of the Pacific Caombat.  It was at the WWII museum there.  Nathan thought the talking about the war went a little long, but he loved the shooting. Emma sat there the whole time.  She thought it was pretty neat.

They demonstrated all the guns and told you about them and different facts about the war.  Then they did a 20 minute reenactment.
Here they are enjoying the show.  Good thing they had cheap snacks.  We kept them in business trying to keep Nate interested in all the talking.
